So you want to start a blog? Amazing!
Blogs are one of the easiest and most popular ways to make money doing what you love to do. Writing content, making courses, selling ebooks, or even just selling affiliate products are all great ways to make a living.
There are a million and one other sites that explain how to start a blog. I’ve read a LOT of blogs about blogging, books about blogging, and I have 5 years of personal experience with blogging now. I’ve learned what works, what doesn’t, and what actually makes the most sense to make a successful blog. Luckily, most of the tips I’m going to share in this post applies to any topic or niche too!
It’s estimated that there will be over 31 million bloggers in the US by the year 2020 (source). Considering that there are over 300 million people in the US, 31 million is a pretty big chunk! More and more people are understanding the importance of having their own blog and how it can be made into a full-time career.
Step 1: Find your “Why” and Pick a Topic
This can be both easy and hard. Why do you want to start a blog? Do you want to just do it as a hobby or make it your job? Do you have skills to share with the world, or do you just want to build your own tribe to connect with other like-minded individuals? No matter what your “why” is, it’s important to set your own personal goals when starting a blog and remember why you’re doing it.
Picking your topic is always fun though! The easiest thing to do if you’re not sure about your topic is to think about what you like and what your personal skills are. Do you you want to write about health? Make a recipe blog? Or maybe even teach others how to speak another language (which is supposed to be a really popular niche these days!)? Write out a list and think about what makes the most sense to you and what you know you can make a lot of content for.
Step 2: Set up Your Domain
This is probably one of the easiest steps out of all of these. Once you have your topic idea, it’s time to think of your domain name. I actually have this process outlined in a super easy way in this post right here, so be sure to check that out so you can start off on the right foot with your blog and domain.
Step 3: Get to Writing
Once you’re all set up with your domain, it’s time to write! Since you should know your topic by now, it can be helpful to write an outline of all of the topics you can write about under that one topic. For example, if you’re going to be writing about pop culture, your main themes could be music, movies, and TV shows. Subtopics for these can include actors, actresses, singers, dancers, directors, producers, etc. The sky is the limit!
There are so many recommendations on what the ideal post length should be, what your tone should be, etc but it really depends on you, your topic, and your readers’ preference. Most of my posts on my sites run from 500-1000 words. I try to write from my heart as well- so usually my tone is more personal as I try to connect with my readers.
It’s good to get at least 15 posts on your site before your official launch too. That way when you start directing people to your site they will have quite a bit of content to look over.
Step 4: Join Social Media and Start Sharing
Once you have those 15 or so posts, it is time to start sharing! Most bloggers find just a few platforms to focus on, and I really think that makes the most sense. There are so many out there so you really need to think about what you feel most comfortable with and what is easiest for you. Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Pinterest, Twitter- these are the most popular out there, so take a look and get familiar with them. Pick the ones that you’re planning on using most and make a new profile for your new blog! Instagram and Twitter might work out best if you’re really starting from scratch as the hashtag system does really help with getting in touch with more people. Pinterest is amazing too- you can read more here how I use Pinterest for traffic!
Step 5: Learn more about Blogging
There is SO MUCH out there that you can do to make a successful blog. Write your own ebooks, sell your own products (like ecourses or physical prodcuts), sell affiliate products, etc. I high recommend checking out Create and Go for their courses- they literally have everything you need for blogging. Their Launch your Blog Biz is perfect for those just getting started, and then they have Pinterest Traffic Avalanche and 6 Figure Blogger for more advanced bloggers.
See what feels right to YOU as it will be your own site. Your site, your rules! I hope that these tips helped a bit, and stay tuned for more.
